Doctor under NFZ

Public healthcare access

Who is eligible
People insured with NFZ (work, unemployment, own business, voluntary insurance) and their family members. With UKR status, since 5 March 2026 only children, pregnant women and a few other groups are covered without insurance — see “Who is entitled to NFZ healthcare?”.
Where to start
Choose a POZ clinic and file a declaration naming your family doctor. Changing the doctor is free twice a year.
Finding a clinic
The register of NFZ facilities is on pacjent.gov.pl; the Healthcare section of this site shows the same list on a map.

Who is entitled to NFZ healthcare?

Free public healthcare: who is insured and what changed for Ukrainians on 5 March 2026

The general rule
NFZ pays for the treatment of insured people: those employed on an umowa o pracę or umowa zlecenie, self-employed, registered as unemployed or receiving a Polish pension — and family members the insured person has registered with ZUS.
Ukrainians with UKR status — from 5.03.2026
The special act no longer applies to healthcare. Without insurance, free treatment is kept only by: children under 18; pregnant women, during and after childbirth; victims of torture or rape; residents of collective accommodation centres with a certificate. They can see a family doctor (POZ) and get reimbursed medicines.
What is not covered even for them
Spa treatment and rehabilitation, infertility treatment, joint replacement, cataract surgery, medicines from Ministry of Health programmes and preventive screening programmes (breast, cervical, colorectal cancer).
Other adults
Full access only with their own insurance: legal work, unemployed status, own business or voluntary NFZ insurance (for residents of Poland; the premium is 9% of the average wage — from 845.67 zł a month in Q3 2026).
Life-threatening situations
Life-saving emergency care is available to everyone with UKR status, insured or not. Emergency number — 112.
How to check your entitlement
At the clinic give your PESEL and show an ID: the eWUŚ system shows at once whether you are insured. If it shows red but you work, bring proof of paid contributions (for example ZUS RMUA from your employer).
Working legally but eWUŚ shows red? Most often the employer has not registered you with ZUS yet — ask the HR or payroll office first.

Prescriptions

E-prescriptions and substitutes

How it works
Prescriptions are electronic: the doctor issues an e-prescription and the pharmacy needs a four-digit code plus your PESEL. A printout is only needed without a PESEL.
Where to check them
Prescriptions, referrals and results live in the Internet Patient Account, accessed with a trusted profile or online banking.
Substitutes
Look for the active substance rather than the brand. The pharmacist must offer a cheaper equivalent with the same composition.
